About African Mask Plant

Despite what its name suggests, the African Mask Plant, or Alocasia Polly, actually comes from South America. Instead, the name comes from its resemblance to, you guessed it, an African Mask. The Alocasia Polly is known for its striking patterned foliage and giant leaves - they can grow up to 30cm in length! Although their leaves can get big, they're slow growers and unlikely to be bigger than 60cm indoors.

Alocasia Amazonica care can bit a bit tricky. They need regular watering but can be delicate with how much you give them. Look out for yellow leaves, this means you've overwatered your Alocasia. Seeing the foliage turn brown? They are wanting a good drink or a little less direct sunlight. During winter, your African Mask will become dormant and the leaves may fall off at this point, so reduce the amount you water them.

Fun fact: you can propagate (create more plants) the African Mask Plant by placing root offshoots into water! Avoid doing this or replanting it too often though as it prefers to be pot-bound. The Polly Plant looks great in kitchens and bathrooms and should be kept in bright indirect sunlight. Like other Alocasia plants, it is air-purifying, but toxic to pets and children.
